Abstract : In the South Pacific, for example in Fiji, severe environmental problems exist, e.g. impact of climate change and solid waste problems. Small Islands Developing States are also characterised by little human and technical capacities. The paper argues that the best option is indeed to implement pollution prevention measures, in particular through adapted product ecodesign. The paper reports results of an on-going project initiating ecodesign projects in the local industry. This original approach is based on an adaptation of the Design for Sustainability methodology that addresses environmental protection and economic and social value creation. The application of the method on a real case study leads to suggestions on possible adaptation of the method to the local context.
