Crystal Structure of B6O

Abstract : The structure of B6O has been determined by the Rietveld analysis of X‐ray powder diffraction data. The sample material was prepared by oxidation of amorphous boron with ZnO at 1350 °C in an argon atmosphere. The structure [Space group, R3̄m; ahex.=5.374(2) Å, chex.=12.331 (3) Å], is of the α‐rhombohedral boron structure with two oxygen atoms in the large interstices along the rhombohedral [111] axis. The oxygen atoms are close to the center points of the boron triangles that are formed by three B12 icosahedra. The B‐O bond length is 1.43(1) Å. The interatomic distance between the oxygen atoms is 3.08(2) Å, indicating that there is little interaction between the two.
