Le géographe Emmanuel de Martonne et l'Europe centrale

The frame of this study is the epistemology of geography and it insists on the rela-tions between German geography and French geography In focussing on the French geograph E. de Martonne (1873-1955) and in restricting the study to Central Europe (in insisting on Germany and Rumania), différent ways of research are explored. First, how de Martonne was embodying the boss of French geography at a critical moment in the history of the discipline ? Second, which role has played E. de Martonne as geograph-expert at the “Comité d'études”, who has prepared the Peace Treaties at the end of the First World War ? Third, the analysis of a synthetic work written by E. de Martonne, that is to say volume 4 of “Géographie Universelle” entitled “l'Europe centrale”, has allowed to study some key concepts such as “Central Europe”, “Frontier”, “Région”, “nationality”. The relation existing between works of the “Comité d'études”, the state of mind of such a French intellectual elite and the posi-tion of the chief of the French geographical school can then be better examined. Moreover, the reception of this work in Germany and the more or less violent German reac-tions are analysed thanks to two methodological instruments : on one hand, going through a corpus of seven German main geographical journals corresponding at two periods of times, 1915-1925 and 1930-1935, and on the other hand, the translation into French of German article extracts.

Ce mémoire de DEA s'inscrit dans un travail sur l'épistémologie de la géographie, et plus particulièrement sur les rapports entre la géographie allemande et la géographie française. En portant une attention particulière au géographe français Emmanuel de Martonne (1873-1955) et en circonscrivant l'étude à l'Europe centrale (en insistant sur l'Allemagne et la Roumanie), différentes pistes de recherche ont pu être explorées. Premièrement, comment E. de Martonne a-t-il incarné le patron de la géographie française à un moment décisif pour l'histoire de la discipline ? Deuxièmement, quel rôle E. de Martonne a-t-il pu jouer en tant que géographe-expert au Comité d'études qui a préparé les Traités de Paix mettant fin à la Première Guerre mondiale ? Troisièmement, l'analyse d'un ouvrage de synthèse réalisé par Emmanuel de Martonne, à savoir le tome 4 de la « Géographie Universelle » intitulé « l'Europe centrale » a permis d'étudier quelques concepts-clés comme « Europe centrale », « frontière », « région », « nationalité ». Par ailleurs, la réception de l'ouvrage en Allemagne et les réactions plus ou moins virulentes des géographes allemands ont pu être analysées grâce à deux outils méthodologiques : d'une part, le dépouillement systématique d'un corpus des sept principales revues géographiques allemandes sur deux périodes bien définies, 1915-1925 et 1930-1935, et d'autre part, la traduction en français d'extraits d'articles allemands.
