Optimal ramp metering strategy with extended LWR model, analysis and computational methods

Résumé

Abstract: This paper treats the problem of optimal tra±c control by coordinated ramp metering techniques. Based on an extension of the Lighthill, Whitham and Richards (LWR) tra±c model, an optimal control formulation is proposed that takes into account boundary conditions, on/o®-ramps and on-ramp °ow saturation. Using a functional analysis setting, a solution is shown to exist and the necessary optimality conditions are stated. These conditions are used to develop an iterative gradient-based algorithm whose convergence properties are illustrated through a study case with real ¯eld data.
