Le métier de forestier : entre rationalité et sensibilité

How do the human and social sciences view the profession of forester at the Office national des Forêts (French National Forestry Board)? Historically, the technocratic approach and technical self-confidence of many foresters during the post-World War II years met with opposition from the environmentalists. As a result of this confrontation, the positions of the forestry corps became more flexible and topics such as ecology or more generally the environment entered into common forestry parlance. Today, the forester's profession is in the process of recomposition. While some still nurture the dream of wholly rationalised forestry based on documented data, others are willing to accept and advocate a subjective dimension and feeling in respect of stand management. Furthermore, the identity of foresters, which is rooted in the history of the Water and Forestry Administration, is also undergoing change: social markers, rituals and attributes are still the embodiment of their shared values but have lost their symbolic significance. The Board, which is experiencing a complete financial, social and territorial transformation, is contending with its internal contradictions. The new demands associated with forests compel it to set aside the exclusively technical and economic approach to forestry and adopt a more readily accessible language.
Quel regard portent les sciences humaines et sociales sur la profession de forestier à l'Office national des Forêts ? Sur un plan historique, la tentation technocratique et l'assurance technicienne de certains forestiers durant les Trente Glorieuses ont rencontré l'opposition des écologistes. Les positions du corps forestier se sont alors assouplies et des thèmes comme l'écologie ou plus largement l'environnement font désormais partie de la rhétorique et de la panoplie forestière. Aujourd'hui, une recomposition du métier de forestier s'opère. Si certains caressent encore le rêve d'une foresterie rationnelle et objectivable, d'autres veulent assumer une subjectivité ou une sensibilité dans la conduite des peuplements. Par ailleurs, l'identité forestière, qui puise ses racines dans l'histoire des Eaux et Forêts, est également en mutation : des marqueurs sociaux, des rituels et des attributs continuent à incarner des valeurs communes et partagées mais ils perdent de leur charge symbolique. L'établissement, en pleine réforme financière, sociale et territoriale se retrouve face à ses contradictions. Les nouvelles demandes en forêt l'obligent à abandonner une vision exclusivement technico-économique de la forêt et à opter pour des discours plus accessibles.
