Design and Characterization of a Half Maxwell Fish-Eye Lens Antenna in the 76 – 81 GHz Band

Résumé

The design and characterization of a new inhomogeneous lens antenna in the 76-81GHz band is presented. This gradient index lens is composed of three homogeneous hemispherical shells approximating thereby the Maxwell fish-eye law and is so called a half Maxwell fish-eye lens. The lens parameters are discussed with a focus on ease of manufacturing. A prototype of this lens fed by a waveguide has been characterized by simulations and compared to measurements. The focusing properties (average gain of 21.7dBi) for a reduced volume (diameter below 7λ0) exhibited by this lens are promising. This lens antenna is relevant for automotive applications.
