The Colonial Roots of a French Chemist in the Amazon Region

Résumé
Paul Le Cointe is a French chemist who lived in the Amazon region from 1891 to his death in 1956, although with frequent stays in Paris. He had multiple activities: Surveyor, rubber planter, explorer, geographer, founder of a school of industrial chemistry, collector of plants and animals... His main publication is the Brazilian Amazon, with 2 volumes (1922) on rubber and economic development, then a third (1934) on useful trees and plants. He was an active member of the Société de géographie commerciale de Paris, a branch of the “Colonial Party”. He became the propagandist for the “valorisation” of the Amazon region, through the exploitation and trade of natural resources. He defended all the colonising doctrines and their prejudices, with an exacerbation of racism: The contempt of the Blacks and the Amerindians crosses all his writings. According to him, the development of the Amazon could only be done by “white” colonisation, if possible European.
Paul Le Cointe est un chimiste français installé en Amazonie de 1891 à sa mort en 1956, avec cependant de fréquents séjours à Paris. Il exerça de multiples activités : géomètre, planteur d’hévéas, explorateur, géographe, fondateur d’une école de chimie industrielle, collecteur de plantes et animaux... Sa publication majeure est l’Amazonie brésilienne, avec 2 tomes (1922) sur le caoutchouc et le développement économique, puis un 3e (1934) sur les arbres et plantes utiles. Il a été membre actif de la Société de géographie commerciale de Paris, une branche du « Parti colonial ». Il se fit le propagandiste de la « mise en valeur » par l’exploitation et le commerce des ressources naturelles. Il défendait toutes les doctrines colonisatrices et leurs préjugés, avec une exacerbation du racisme : le mépris des Noirs et des Amérindiens traverse tous ses écrits. Selon lui, la mise en valeur de l’Amazonie ne pouvait se faire que par une colonisation « blanche », si possible européenne.
