Proportionality problems in some mathematical texts prior to fourteenth century

Résumé

Proportional reasoning seems to be one of the oldest mathematical problem solving tools. Problems involving proportionality have consistently appeared in mathematics texts over time. Moreover, proportionality is still today one of the main topics in school arithmetic and several studies point out difficulties shown by the students in this context. In this paper, we perform an analysis of historical proportionality problems in order to describe the main situations where proportionali-ty naturally appeared. Knowledge of these situations might be of interest in order to design and develop well-contextualized teaching and learning activities.
