Development of mathematics-related beliefs scale for the 5 th grade students in Turkey

Résumé

The aim of this study was to develop a valid and reliable scale for 5 th grade students in Turkey to investigate their mathematics-related beliefs. For this purpose, a mathematics related belief scale was constructed by the researchers based on Op't Eynde, De Corte and Verschaffel (2003) framework and piloted by 390 5 th grade students from 2 middle schools in Ankara, Turkey. Data were analysed by descriptive and inferential statistics. Factor analysis revealed three factors: beliefs about mathematics and mathematics learning, self-efficacy beliefs, and beliefs about the role of the teacher. The overall reliability of the scale was .77, indicating a good reliability. The mathematics-related belief scale will be used in a future study where 5 th grade students' mathematics related beliefs will be identified.
