Legua a legua. Análisis de la visita de Antonio de Caravajal a Michoacán (1523-1524) desde los Sistemas de Información Geográfica

Abstract : In this paper, we examine the Antonio de Caravajal’s visit to Michoacán in 1523-1524 through the analytical tools of a Geographic Information System. In particular, we estimate the distances travelled by Caravajal by considering the friction offered by different types of terrain and thus estimate the effort needed to move over it (cost distance). We show that the length of the leagues recorded by Caravajal varies greatly from those that are generally accepted, which leads us to conclude that his estimates were very subjective. Additionally, when considering three walking rates, we were able to assess that Caravajal moved at a rapid pace (8.5 km/h), just like other travelers that crossed the region during the sixteenth century, such as father Alonso Ponce. However, even with this adjustment, the estimation of the time required to undertake certain journeys recorded by Caravajal casts doubt on the veracity of some of his reports.
