A Comprehensive Catalogue of Switchbacks : Evidence for a Generation in the Lower Corona

Résumé

The nature and origin of the numerous sudden deflections of the magnetic field that are observed in the inner heliosphere (and often called switchbacks for the largest ones) are still a mystery. Thanks to a comprehensive catalogue of all deflections from each encounter, with typically thousands of events per encounter, we can now investigate in detail their statistical properties. Here we focus on the magnitude of the deflection, and investigate how it relates to the properties of the events we see. Indeed, we are in the presence of a continuum of deflections, whose smallest one are equally informative as large switchbacks. Our analysis provides strong evidence for an origin that is rooted in the lower corona, and which could be well triggered by jet-like events.
