IN FAVOUR OF HISTORICAL ECOLOGY - EXAMPLE OF THE “LA SERRE” FOREST (JURA, FRANCE)

A historic ecology study serves to highlight the anthropological impacts on the natural dynamics of the “massif de la Serre” over the last three thousand years. Beginning as relicts in the Sub-Boreal zone, these actions were to intensify in the Sub-Atlantic zone. The Roman occupation was reflected by some attempt at management. In the 8th century, the metalworking industry deeply affected the forested area. From the 12th to the middle of the 18th century, failing any coherent management, a variety of pressures downgraded stands to the status of simple coppice. This deterioration reachedaclimax in the 19th century with the concurrent growth in population and industry. A justifiable effort to enrich stands began in the 19th century leading to the disappearance of many sun-loving species. Our work emphasises the need to consider archaeological remnants. They are remarkable instruments for understanding and interpreting the determinism of biodiversity. These ecological-historical factors must no longer be dismissed.
