Occitan : de l'importance d'être une langue
Résumé
Occitan: how important it is to be a language Linguists often consider it pointless to argue whether an idiom is language or not, and whether two idioms belong to the same language or not. The present contribution aims to underscore that, as far as Occitan is concerned at least, being a language and forming one language is important indeed. Occitan as an (external) language doesn't results from the projection of some political power, past or present. Occitan did rise and function as a language before the modern pattern of a State was even settled. Medieval Occitan existed across various local and feudal powers and interacted with them (receiving support from them and giving them prestige) but did not identify with any of them as French paradigmatically did later, in the context of the Kingdom of France and later of the post French Revolution nation state. In its state of decay, Occitan kept somehow the kind of evidence it had in its days of glory. The language was socially devaluated, but still was perceived as one, by speakers or outsiders as well. The maximally fragmented vision of the language as a juxtaposition of potentially arbitrarily distinguishable local forms largely results of the conception elaborated by XIXth century linguists, whose naturalist epistemological model met the ideology of the Third Republic and its educational policy. The negation or the dissolution of Occitan as a language satisfied both requirements. The final suggestion of this contribution is that whereas being outside the modern model of a nation state (which allows some languages to receive the ultimate guarantee of a Navy) has been a cause of weakness for Occitan and may well lead to its disappearance in a near future, it can also be a source of inspiration for uncoupling language and state, a relevant preoccupation today in Europe where a level of political organization above the historical nation states is progressively gaining reality. Being a language on its own and by itself may become in interesting model in a not too distant future. An interesting and stimulating perspective for people involved in the defence of Occitan is to keep this option open and this model alive. The only strength of Occitan is the richness of the cultural offer its represents by connecting to the competence of contemporary speakers a large variety of production though time and space, literary production in particular. In some sense it may seem derisory, but it may also prove highly attractive sooner than expected.

Ne recebèt de sosten e lor tornèt de prestigi, mas sens s'identificar amb un d'eles coma foguèt puèi lo cas del Francés amb lo Reialme de França and mai tard amb l'Estat nacion d'aprèp la Revolucion francesa. Quitament dins sa situacion d'anequeliment mai grand, l'occitan se gardèt quicòm de la forma d'evidéncia qu'aguèt a son treslús. La lenga se trobèt socialament desavalorada, sens quitar d'èsser percebuda coma lenga e coma una, pels parlaires coma pels de defòra. La vision maximalament trocejada de la lenga coma una juxtaposicion de formas localas que se podián destriar gaireben a plaser unas de las autras sortís largament d'una conception elaborada pels linguistas del sègle XIX, que son modèl epistemologic naturalista rejonhiá l'ideologia de la Tresena Republica e confortava sa politica escolara. La negacion o la dissolucion de l'occitan coma lenga satisfasiá un e l'autre requeriment. La suggestion finala d'aquesta contribucion es que, s'es ben lo cas que lo fach de se trobar en defòra del modèl modèrne de l'Estat nacion (que permet a d'unas lengas que i a de recebre la garentida ultima d'una marina de guèrra) es estat una causa de flaquitge per l'Occitan e s'es ben vertat que se poiriá plan que menèsse a sa desaparicion dins un avenidor propdan, totun aquela situacion pòt èsser una font d'inspiration per desencoblar, desengranar, la lenga e l'Estat, çò que sembla una preoccupacion pertinenta dins l'Euròpa d'uèi ont un nivèl d'organizacion politica al dessús dels Estats nacions tradicionals se fa cada jorn mai real. Èsser una lenga, per se e de per se, pòt venir un modèl interessant dins un avenidor sai que pas tan lonhdan. Una perspectiva interessanta e estimulanta pels aparaires de l'Occitan es de gardar la possiblitat dobèrta e lo modèl viu, e mai corresponda pas una practica sociala generalizada. La sola fòrça de l'occitan es la riquesa de l'ofèrta culturala que representa en religant a la competéncia dels parlaires de uèi una granda varietat de produccions a travèrs lo temps e l'espaci, una produccion literària en particular mas tanben lo recuèlh de la vida populara de la lenga. D'un biais pòt semblar derisòri, mas se pòt ça que la revelar atrasent e sedusent per fòrça monde, mai lèu que s'esperariá.
