Astérix en traduction

In this paper, we examine the relation between linguistic frozenness and translation. First, we propose to define the notion of idiomaticity so that it can be applied to an entire text. Frozenness is then defined as one of the phenomena that come under idiomaticity. But we note that frozenness should not be restricted to non-compositional, non-transparent expressions : idiomaticity and frozenness are not binary but scalar notions. In particular, we argue that collocation, although usually compositional and semantically transparent, partake of frozenness and idiomaticity. Finally, on this theoretical basis, we look at how different aspects of frozenness in the supposedly 'untranslatable' Asterix comics do get translated in English and German. What we observe is that these aspects are in fact key factors for a successful translation.
Cet article traite de la question du figement en rapport avec la traduction. Dans cette perspective, nous proposons tout d'abord une définition de l'idiomaticité capable d'être appliquée à un texte entier. Le figement est alors défini comme l'un des phénomènes relevant de l'idiomaticité. Mais la notion de figement elle-même ne peut être réduite aux expressions non compositionnelles non transparentes : idiomaticité et figement ne sont pas des notions de nature binaire, mais scalaire. En particulier, nous proposons l'idée que les collocations, bien que généralement compositionnelles et sémantiquement transparentes, relèvent du figement et de l'idiomaticité. Dans ce cadre, nous observons comment différents aspects du figement dans des albums d'Astérix, réputés " intraduisibles ", sont rendus en allemand et en anglais, pour constater que ces aspects constituent précisément l'un des véritables enjeux de la traduction.
