Haroun Tazieff played a significant role in the eyes of a broad public in making the geology known by many, who would have never otherwise heard about this scientific discipline. Although he touched to other aspects, as groundwater and speleology, volcanology is the field he became the best known. A sportive temperament, engaged in politics, he excelled in the medias (with his wild face and rocky accent). He long financed his works from his own incomes (films, books, conferences...), which was not usual then and was eventually considered with suspicion by the conventional public research community. He however contributed significantly to a scientific domain, volcanology, which he popularized, giving birth to numerous vocations for the youths. He was finally recognized by the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), who offered him a position of research director (he was then 55 years old). Ten years after his death, COFRHIGEO tried to overcome this lack of recognition. The aim of this paper is to fulfil this gap with a first contribution to the identification of his main contribution to geological sciences. The study concentrates on the years 1966-1982, his period of highest scientific productivity, before his ministerial responsibilities embarked him for another domain, risk management, to which he also gave a significant contribution. This paper is a first contribution, written by a researcher who worked with him during the concerned period. In order to reach a real historic dimension, other complementary contributions will be welcomed.

Haroun Tazieff est un personnage qui a joué un rôle marquant vis-à-vis du public pour faire connaître la géologie. Bien qu'il ait touché à d'autres domaines, comme les eaux souterraines et la spéléologie, c'est dans le domaine de la volcanologie qu'il s'est fait connaître. Personnage médiatique (visage basané, accent rocailleux inimitable), sportif et engagé, y compris dans la politique, c'est par ses films, ses livres et ses conférences qu'il a longtemps financé ses propres travaux, une démarche inhabituelle et jugée suspecte dans le monde de la recherche scientifique publique française. Il a néanmoins apporté une contribution significative dans le domaine qu'il a popularisé, la volcanologie, au point d'éveiller de nombreuses vocations : une qualité finalement reconnue (il a alors 55 ans) par son accession au poste de maître, puis de directeur de recherches au CNRS. Dix ans après son décès, le COFRHIGEO a souhaité combler une lacune de reconnaissance posthume. L'objectif de cet article est d'y apporter une première réponse en tentant de déterminer les principaux apports du célèbre volcanologue à la science géologique. Il porte plus particulièrement sur la période 1966-1982, la plus productive de sa carrière au plan scientifique, avant que ses responsabilités ministérielles ne l'engagent dans un autre domaine, celui de la gestion des risques, dans lequel il a également apporté une contribution significative. Il s'agit d'un premier essai, rédigé par un chercheur qui a été amené à le côtoyer pendant toute cette période. Pour atteindre une véritable dimension historique, cet article mériterait d'être éclairé par d'autres contributions.
