A survey on the public perception of CCS in France

An awareness and opinion survey on Carbon Capture and Storage was conducted on a representative sample of French aged 15 years and above. About 6\% of respondents were able to provide a satisfying definition of the technology. The key question about 'approval of or opposition to' the use of CCS in France was asked twice, first after presenting the technology, then after exposing the potential adverse consequences. Approval rates, 59\% and 38\%, show that there is no a priori rejection of the technology, but public trust needs to be build. The sample was split in two to test for a semantic effect : questioning one half about 'Stockage' (English : storage), the other about 'Sequestration'. Manipulating the vocabulary had no statistically significant effect on approval rates. Stockage is more meaningful, but does not convey the idea of permanent monitoring.
Une enquête d'opinion et de sensibilisation sur la capture et le stockage de carbone a été menée sur un échantillon représentatif de français âgés de 15 ans et plus. Environ 6% des répondants étaient capables de donner une définition satisfaisante de cette technologie. La question clé relative à 'l'approbation ou l'opposition à' l'utilisation de la CCS en France a été posée deux fois, d'abord après une présentation de la technologie, puis après un exposé de potentielles conséquences défavorables. Les taux d'approbation, 59% et 38%, montrent qu'il n'existe pas de rejet a priori de cette technologie, mais la confiance du public nécessite d'être construite. L'échantillon a été dédoublé pour tester un effet sémantique : en interrogeant la première moitié sur le 'Stockage' ('Storage' en anglais), et l'autre sur la 'Séquestration'. La manipulation du vocabulaire n'a pas d'effet statistiquement significatif sur le niveau d'approbation. Le 'stockage' fait davantage sens mais ne communique pas d'idée de contrôle permanent.
