In memory of Phil Doak

In this presentation, Phil Doak's history will be reviewed from his birth in North Dakota to his retirement in East Meon, Hampshire. Professor Doak had degrees from The Julliard School in New York, and from the University of Oklahoma and studied at MIT before moving to Manchester in the UK, and then Liverpool University, and finally, Southampton University. The reasons for his move from the US to the UK will be described. It was at Southampton University that he became founding Editor of the Journal of Sound and Vibration, in which capacity he served for almost forty years. In addition, the main areas of his research will be highlighted, including room acoustics, aeroacoustics, duct acoustics and sound propagation outdoors.
