► We explore if emotional prosody has a rapid influence on eye movements. ► Results of fixation duration show rapid impact of emotional prosody on gaze behavior. ► Results of fixation frequency show similar rapid, apparently mandatory impact. ► Influence of prosody can be overridden by semantic cues if latter are task relevant.
