Ethnos ou ethnie ? avatars anciens et modernes des noms de peuples ibères
Résumé
This paper inquires into the conception of Iberian peoples that was worked out by the Greeks and the Romans, distinguishing three periods: before the Roman conquest (greek mythographs and periegetes), during the conquest (annalists and historians) and after it (geographers who took into account the administrative modifications of provincial territories). Secondly, we point out some recurrent errors in the archaeologic use of ancient ethnonyms, due partly to a fixist vision of ethnicity, and partly to the abuse of a historicist interpretation of ancient geographic sources. Finally, a special attention is paid to two examples: Contestania and Edetania.
