This paper examines the various references to theatre and to dramatic theory in Murāri's Rama Beyond Price (Anargharāghava). It analyses the ways in which a reflection on theatre and the dramatic art shapes the whole play, through subtle allusions and through a particular presentation of the Rāma story. In conclusion, it proposes a different way of understanding Sanskrit plays of the classical Indian tradition, suggesting that a better understanding of learned references would contribute to a better understanding of the plays themselves.
