Le Mésolithique de Haute-Normandie : taphonomie et interprétation chronoculturelle.

Most of the knowledge on te Mesolithic period in the north of France has been largely based on surface findings or sandy sites. However, the past 15 years have seen the discovery of several extensive sites. Due to their excellent preservation, these newly-discovered sites have permitted a reorganization of the research concerning the French Mesolithic and have revealed several new themes. Currently, main topics include the development of these sites as well as the organization of human societies. The Mesolithic site of Acquigny "l'Onglais" in Haute-Normandie (France), excavated during the 1980s, is a good example demonstrating the difficulties of interpretation in an open-air site. Following a discussion concerning the taphonomic conditions and a reevaluation of the radiocarbon dating, an attempt was made to determine the nature of the Mesolithic occupation. Two models were proposed : first, the possibility of a homogenous occupation (only one occupation during a long time) ; and second, a hypothesis stating that there were several successive occupations. Studies of this site seem to support the latter proposition. The discovery of microlithic tools of two sampling areas near the main excavation (Secteur GS) as well as the analysis of flint artifacts by the different physical aspects may give some clues as to the history of this site. This analysis allowed for the spatial and typological isolation of several tools which seem to belong to two different chronological phases characteristic of the Mesolithic (Preboreal and Boreal). Carrying out radiocarbon dating should allow confirmation of these results. Although the contribution of this particular site is limited, its study has nonetheless permitted to re-examine the data from this region and suggest a new chronology.

Depuis ces quinze dernières années, et grâce à d'importantes découvertes, de nouvelles problématiques portant sur les processus de formation, le degré d'intégrité et l'organisation spatiale des gisements, ont orienté les recherches sur le Mésolithique du nord de la France. L'étude du gisement d'Acquigny, entreprise dans le cadre d'un travail de thèse (Souffi, 2004), est un bon exemple de l'apport de ces nouveaux axes de recherches dans l'interprétation d'un site fouillé il y a près de vingt ans. En effet, après avoir rediscuté les conditions taphonomiques du gisement et remis en cause la seule datation réalisée, une première intention visait à déterminer la nature de l'occupation mésolithique du principal secteur fouillé en vérifiant deux hypothèses. Tout d'abord l'éventualité d'une homogénéité culturelle du gisement, conformément aux premières interprétations, puis celle d'une succession d'occupations à différentes phases du Mésolithique. Au terme de cette étude, la seconde hypothèse est apparue plus convaincante. Au sein du principal secteur fouillé deux ensembles semblant correspondre aux deux chronozones du Préboréal et du Boréal ont pu être reconnus grâce à une répartition typologique et spatiale en fonction des aspects physiques différentiels du matériel lithique. Cependant, en l'absence de datations, ces résultats demeurent fragiles et restent encore à confirmer. Si l'apport du gisement d'Acquigny, qui représente le seul site mésolithique fouillé de Haute-Normandie, s'en trouve par conséquent limité en terme de chronologie régionale, il a su entraîner un réexamen des données et une nouvelle proposition concernant les groupes mésolithiques ayant occupé l'actuel territoire haut-normand
