In 1960's, land was to be redistributed to peasants, but it was never redistributed. Of course, concerned people reacted, but in an original way, thinking that the community should take initiatives to solve the problems themselves instead of the Government of India. That is the origin of the "Foot march".

Après l'indépendance de l'Inde, il était prévu que les terres soient redistribuées au bénéfice des personnes qui les travaillaient, mais il n'en a jamais rien été. Certains ont alors cherché à mettre en place des solutions pour revendiquer un droit à la terre et ont initié une méthode originale plutôt que de solliciter le gouvernement indien. Cette démarche revendicative et non violente est à l'origine de la " Grande marche ".
