This article aims to reconsider the house as a generative scheme of social space. Instead of interpreting it as a simple projection of a social structure into physical space, the author proposes to treat it as a tool for representing one and the same social structure from several different points of view. Rather than supplying the substrate or image of a group (according to the descent group model), the house integrates the other's point of view into the constitution of the group as such, thus presenting itself as the objectification of a relationship, the paradigmatic case being that of matrimonial alliance. Starting from this conceptualization of alliance as an axis around which perspectives are transformed, domestic architecture can serve as an analytical tool for studying kinship systems. This article tries to show this by drawing on three examples taken from different regions of the world (Timor, Western Amazonia and the American Northwest Coast).

Cet article vise une réévaluation de la maison en tant que schème génératif de l'espace social. Au lieu de l'interpréter comme simple projection d'une structure sociale dans l'espace physique, nous proposons de la considérer comme un outil pour représenter une même structure sociale de plusieurs points de vue. Bien plus que de fournir le substrat ou l'image d'un groupe (selon le modèle des groupes de filiation), la maison inscrit le point de vue de l'autre dans la constitution du groupe même et se présente ainsi comme objectification d'une relation, dont le cas paradigmatique est l'alliance matrimoniale. Partant de cette conceptualisation de l'alliance en tant qu'axe d'une transformation de perspectives, l'architecture domestique peut servir d'outil d'analyse pour étudier les systè mes de parenté. Cet article cherche à le montrer à travers trois exemples tirés de régions différentes (Timor, Amazonie occidentale et Côte Nord-Ouest).
