Most of the contents of the Web, today, are specifically represented and can be read by human users and are not designed to be processed by software. A browser can, according to precise instructions, arrange and display the information in a certain way, but has no way to recognize them or give them a special significance for their preparation. The 'Semantic Web' or Semantic Web is born into this environment and allows to introduce a semantic structure in the contents of the Web not separate from the Web' traditional ', but, by introducing the meaning of the data, it' is an extension , which adds a new functionality machines, which become able to process data that until now simply displayed. So if the Web until now was a means of sending documents for people in this way it becomes a source of data and information that can be processed automatically. To achieve this, software must have access to a structured set of information and a set of inference rules that allow him to make automatic reasoning: this implies a close link between the problems of the Semantic Web and what concerns knowledge representation systems.
