Résumé

Objectives: Comparison of clinical and radiographic outcomes of a combination of enamel matrix derivatives (EMD) and a synthetic bone graft (SBG) with EMD alone in wide and deep 1- and 2- wall intrabony defects 12 months after treatment. Method: In 73 patients with chronic periodontitis and one intrabony lesion, defects were randomly assigned to EMD/SBG (test) or EMD (control). Bone sounding, attachment levels, probing pocket depths, bleeding on probing and recessions were measured. Changes in defect fill were recorded radiographically. Results: Both treatments led to significant improvements. In the EMD/SBG group a mean defect fill of 2.7±1.9 mm was calculated and 2.8±1.6 mm in the EMD group. Test sites gained 1.7±2.1 mm in clinical attachment and control sites 1.9±1.7 mm. Radiographic analysis confirmed that deeper defects were associated with greater defect fill. Conclusion: The results show comparable outcomes following both treatments after 12 months. Clinical relevance Scientific rationale for the study: Clinical and radiographic comparison of EMD/SBG with EMD alone in uncontained intrabony defects after 12 months. Principal findings: The data demonstrate significant improvements compared to baseline as well as minor (insignificant) improvements compared to 6-month results. Practical implications: Local defect characteristics have an impact on treatment outcomes.
