The battle of Magh Rath is considered as an important date in Ireland's history as testified by O'Keeffe in his 1913/1996 edition of Buile Suibhne, without further explanations. This article explores the different political influences epitomized in this battle, its far reaching consequences escaping probably the protagonists' minds. The surrounding world of the time could be understood as a competition between two worlds, the Christian one on the one hand and the traditional one on the other. The tale of Buile Suibhne could be understood therefore as explaining in fine the defeat of Colum Cille's party, opening the way to Patrick's Roman era in Ireland.
