The condensation of the amino groups of 4-(4'-nitrophenylazo)aniline or of 4,4'-diaminoazo-benzene with 2-oxocarboxylates at chlorido bridged halfsandwich complexes [(C5Me5)MCl2]2 (M = Rh, Ir), [(p-cymene)RuCl2]2 or of [(C5Me5)(Co(CO)I2] provides a convenient way to attach azodyes to a metal ion via an 2-iminocarboxylate ligand.
