Analysis of the emotions of the characters in three fourteenth-century Middle Dutch miracles of the Virgin: , and . Special attention is given to the transformation of grief into joy, since the texts themselves refer to the miraculous events in terms of this transformation. The study of emotions can serve as an innovative interpretive framework, to complement more traditional theological, devotional, cultural or literary approaches. In addition, the case of shows that one of the main themes of this text, the importance of compassion, is closely related to the emotions of the characters and the intended reaction of the public.
