Policies to overcome poverty and hunger: the role of the Bolsa Família program in a rural settlement in Brazil. The paper shows, from a research in the rural settlement Horto Vergel in the city of Mogi Mirim/Brazil, how is the food (in)security levels of the families that are living there, and the association of these levels with the benefits of the Bolsa Familia program. This is a conditional cash transfer program for the poor to promote the welfare and poverty alleviation. It was observed that despite 43 families of the Horto Vergel are benefiting from the Bolsa Familia program, only seven families are at a level of food security. These numbers, among other factors, such as low education of household heads, for example, point to the fact that the Bolsa Família program has not been sufficient to reduce the vulnerabilities of people. We highlight that the food security in the settlements depends not only on household production, but also on factors such as access and consumption of food, appropriate policy and strategic development plans that address the weaknesses and harness the potential of families. Therefore, it is necessary to specified public policies to the most vulnerable households living in rural areas and programs with inter-sectoral reinforcements with health, education, housing, enhancement of the minimum wage, etc. These policies should strengthen the rural farm household and combat inequalities in the field, ensuring a minimum income to the poorest and sustainability of production.
