Design of a Smart Electrolytic Capacitor Circuit

Résumé

Abstract - Electrolytic filter capacitors are frequently responsible for static converter breakdowns. The best indicator of electrolytic capacitors ageing is the equivalent series resistance (ESR) which increases versus time. To predict this ageing, a smart electrolytic capacitor circuit has been realized. This latter warns and gives the time when the capacitor must be changed. This time is deduced from the measures of the capacitor voltage ripple, the capacitor current and the case temperature which allow to know on-line the ESR for the sound and aged capacitor.
