L'ORIENTATION MARCHANDE EST-ELLE UN FACTEUR PREDOMINANT A L'ADOPTION DES INNOVATIONS AGRICOLES ?

Résumé

For several years, Cameroon has put on the market improved maize varieties to increase production. But, Cameroon continues to import large quantities of maize. Why Cameroon continues to import maize while research has developed several varieties that are supposed to boost production? Farmers have really embraced these improved varieties? If not, what are the obstacles to its adoption? Using survey data of 2007, we find that market orientation is a factor in the adoption of agricultural innovation. More farmers realize that there is a rent in maize production, the more they will adopt new improved varieties of maize. Moreover, the placing of women to men has a positive impact on adoption of innovation; indeed, men are increasingly interested in more food crops such as maize. For cons, the fact of belonging to a farmers' organization does not affect the behavior of adoption of agricultural innovations. In addition, more acreage planted, the fewer farmers will adopt the new maize variety.
