The lake Alaotra area, one of the main rice barns of Madagascar, has been a favourite place of intervention for various development projects since the 1960's. The BV-lac project is implemented since 2003, with integrated development at the watershed level and special focus on conservation agriculture on rain-fed areas (tanetys/hills), on poor water controlled rice fields and on irrigated systems. This watershed approach integrates the constraints, complementarities, externalities and impacts on the various landscape units which compose a water-catchment area and thus intends to tackle the important issues of sustainable development. Erosion, poor upland soil fertility, climatic risks, poor water management and a difficult economic context characterize the area, a permanent pioneer zone which doubles its population every 18 years. It seems important to identify and separate the “myths” from the reality, in terms of development, and to better understand the determinants of technical and social changes and various development policies. The challenge of sustainable development involves an in-depth reflection on methods and modalities of development patterns which generate processes of innovation adapted to local social context taking into account farming strategies. Farming systems and farmers' organisations have considerably evolved since the 1960's. The objective of this communication is to understand through the processes of innovation currently in progress (CA, livestockagriculture integration, diversification...) the farming strategies as well as the determinants of the real technical and social changes of this area rich in history and development policies by separating the myths from the realities.
