Les intermédiaires en grande hydraulique. Le cas du périmètre irrigué du Gharb, Maroc

In innovation system approaches, innovation is a complex interactive system, involving different actors with distributed knowledge and competences. The objective of the paper is to show that there are multiple knowledge intermediaries, most of them informal, that participate to innovation process. This paper approaches the role of knowledge intermediaries through the sociotechnical network concept, to describe and analyse interactions between actors – human and nonhuman – in innovation process. We identified three types of knowledge intermediary: 1) the official intermediaries, considered as experts, such as extension agents, national consultancy firms; 2) local experts, for instance local traders, specialized labourers and private consultants; 3) daily intermediaries, peers in neighbouring, family, labour and marketing networks. The results showed that local experts and daily intermediaries are the main knowledge intermediary for farmers, but also the less “visible” and their access depends on farmer's network. This turns into question the role of extension agents, and in a broader way the role of development agents: they do no longer to have the skills to meet farmers' needs and demands, but they can play a central role in innovation process by connecting farmers with the diverse knowledge intermediaries. The results imply new issues: how farmers can innovate when they don't know any knowledge intermediaries? What is the relative performance of the different knowledge intermediaries?
