Tracking algorithms chase down pathogens
Résumé
Dynamic processes such as pathogens invasion strategies and immune response to infections involve a highly complex machinery both at the molecular and cellular level. Recent advances in imaging techniques have allowed to observe these processes with very high detail over extended periods of time, yielding huge amounts of time-lapse images in multiple colors and dimensions. While visual interpretation of such data is both cumbersome and limited, scientists progressively turn to automated quantification methods able to process spatio-temporal data in a robust and systematic manner. This review presents a number of methods developed for multiple object tracking in biological imaging, in particular, particle tracking techniques and their application to trajectography studies, and cell tracking techniques to monitor cell deformation and motility.
