Les constructions participiales en anglais
Résumé
The participial phrase is typically either integrated within the structure of a noun phrase, in which case it is a dependent of the head noun, within the paradigm of attributive elements; or else (when not integrated within the noun phrase) it belongs to the paradigm of predicative adjuncts. As a non-finite relation, the participial relation is indexed to a contextually given situation (referentially a state of things or an event, with its own set of coordinates). Its indexation is typically operated through the nominal head (when the participail phrase is integrated) or the noun phrase which functions as its predicand (when the participial phrase functions as a predicative adjunct) within the finite structure, and provides a semantic, chronological or logical, relation of concomitance or contiguity between the participial relation and the embedding finite.
Le participe se caractérise en anglais non pas uniquement par ses propriétés morphologiques mais comme un fonctionnement verbal. Prototypiquement, soit le SPart entre dans le paradigme des caractérisations intégrées au SN (cf. J. Gardes Tamine, dans le présent volume), en concurrence avec toutes les formes syntaxiques de l'épithète ; soit dans le paradigme des appositions avec pour concurrents les mêmes constituants. Il a alors un statut co-prédicatif. A l'incidence au support nominal s'ajoute une indexation sur un substrat énonciatif. Cette indexation s'opère par l'intermédiaire du support d'incidence. C'est de cette indexation que vient le lien étroit, de concomitance ou de contiguïté (chronologique ou logique), sémantique, entre la relation participiale et le procès à mode fini de la structure d'accueil.
