Style in L2: the icing on the cake?

Résumé

Henry Tyne's chapter investigates the question of style in L2. His data comprises formal presentations, formal conversations and informal conversations produced by twenty Anglophone university students. He hypothesises that if variation across the various types of production is a sign of stylistic sophistication, we could expect final year students having spent a year in a francophone country to exhibit more variation than first year students. All students were shown to vary their productions according to the type of context, thus showing sensitivity to style, but the more advanced group did not seem to consistently vary more than the less advanced group.
