Assessment of Forest Biological Diversity. A FAO training course. 2- Case study in India

Résumé

This booklet is based on data collected mainly during a FAO Training Programme entitled “Assessment of forest biological diversity” conducted at the French Institute of Pondicherry. The aim of this programme was to impart training to foresters from three Southeast Asian countries (Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia) on biodiversity assessment. The field-work and data collection were undertaken by the trainees in three forest types, viz., evergreen, moist deciduous and dry deciduous forests, in Karnataka, South India. Three methods were used: establishment of a single plot of 40x40 m, cluster of 20x20 m plots and cluster of variable-area plots. The field-work was done with the following objectives: Demonstrate the use of tools to characterise and assess a forest stand: height, girth, biovolume, density, basal area, population stages of trees, saplings and seedlings, species richness estimator (Chao) and species diversity indices (Simpson and Shannon); Compare the methods used in the three habitat types sampled and get a proper choice of the method and tools to use that would be more appropriate for an assessment of the forest stand studied. The analyses on the structure and characteristics of the population and on the species richness and diversity were based on the data collected in the field. The results of this case study have been compiled in this booklet as a reminder of the analyses that can be done to assess the structure and biodiversity of a forest stand. This report does not aim to give an assessment of the biological diversity in these three different forests, as the sampling was not done thoroughly, due to time constraints within the frame of the Training Programme.
