Résumé
When the thumb is attached to the body : continuity and discontinuity in the history of signs. The sign MADEMOISELLE, used by the Algerian born French deaf before Independence, where the thumb is fixed on the chin and the index finger oscillates, illustrates methodical approaches to etymology : research in the field and of historical documents, distinction between official forms and those actually used, the relationship between conceptual fields and cultural domains (here, the construction of the signs MONSIEUR, MADAME and MADEMOISELLE from elements of fashion of the times) and, finally, evidence of new evolutionary tendencies homologous to the phonetic rules of spoken languages (in this case, the tendency of the thumb to become fixed to the body throughout the course of time). The combined application of these methods furnishes the origin of the sign studied here – that is, the neckline of the feminine dress.
Le signe MADEMOISELLE pratiqué par les sourds-muets pieds-noirs avant l'Indépendance algérienne, pouce fixé sur le menton et index oscillant, permet d'illustrer les méthodes de l'étymologie : recherches sur le terrain et sur archives, distinction entre formes officielles et formes réellement pratiquées, relations entre champs notionnels et domaines culturels (ici, la construction des signes MONSIEUR, MADAME et MADEMOISELLE par stylisation d'éléments vestimentaires) ; et, finalement, mise en évidence de nouvelles tendances évolutives, homologues des lois phonétiques des langues vocales (ici, la tendance du pouce à se fixer sur le corps au cours de l'histoire). La mise en œuvre conjuguée de ces méthodes fournit l'étymon du signe étudié, qui s'avère être le décolleté de la robe féminine.
