Comment on Birth'paper on "Time and the biological consequences of Globalization"

In his paper Birth describes the conflicts between human circadian rythms and the current time schedule of social life. His criticisms are more often than not pertinent, but at times the contradictions are also overestimated. It is true that globalization tends to exaggerate the homogenization of standard time, but this tendency is not the consequence of the modern scientific conception of standard time itself. Universal time and time zones are compromises between the regularity of new clocks and the less regular rotation of the globe, which is not forgotten but observed.

Dans son article Birth décrit les conflits entre les rythmes circadiens de l'être humain et l'actuel modèle de temps de la vie sociale. Ses critiques sont la plupart du temps justifiées, mais parfois les contradictions sont mal déterminées. Il est vrai que la mondialisation tend à exaggérer l'homogénisation du temps standard, mais ce n'est pas la conséquences de notre façon moderne de mesurer le temps. Le "temps universel" et les zones de temps sont des compromis entre la régularité des nouvelles horloges et la moindre régularité de la rotation du globe terrestre, une rotation qui n'est pas négligée mais prise en compte.
