Optimal Design of Safety Instrumented Systems

Résumé

This paper presents an optimization model of availability and redundancy allocation of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) in order to achieve the required Safety Integrity Level (SIL). The SIL level is addressed by ANSI/ISA S84.01-1996 and IEC61508 safety standards. The optimal allocation is based on the use of genetic algorithms. An example which illustrates the use of the optimization model to achieve a SIL level 1 under budget and components choice constraints is proposed.
