Motor control in speech production and the perceptual efficiency of anticipatory gestures

Implications and objectives of the project
The present project, which focuses on a major aspect of the study of coordination of articulatory gestures – anticipation – represents one of the most essential steps towards the understanding of control and coordination mechanisms in speech production and perception. Such mechanisms underlie, to a large extent, language acquisition, some speech pathologies, or a proper functioning of anthropomorphic speech synthesis systems. The main thrust of research works carried out within this project is to understand the organisation of anticipatory gestures that govern speech production and perception activities, for diverse languages using such fine-grained spatio-temporal mechanisms for phonological purposes. Results should therefore account for both motor and cognitive strategies, specific to complex and varied linguistic tasks, and other strategies largely shared by animal sensory-motor behaviour in general.

Rappel des enjeux et objectifs
Ce projet, qui focalise sur un aspect important de l'étude de la coordination des gestes articulatoires — l'anticipation —, constitue une des étapes essentielles vers la compréhension des mécanismes de contrôle et de coordination en production et en perception de la parole. Ces mécanismes sous-tendent largement l'acquisition du langage, certaines pathologies de la parole, ou encore une bonne performance de systèmes de synthèses anthropomorphiques de la parole. Nos recherches ont pour but de comprendre l'organisation des gestes anticipatoires qui gouvernent la production et la perception de l'activité parole, et ce pour diverses langues utilisant de tels contrôles spatio-temporels fins, à finalité phonologique. Elles doivent donc aboutir à la mise en évidence des stratégies cognitivo-motrices propres à des tâches linguistiques complexes et variées, ainsi que d'autres stratégies largement partagées par les conduites sensori-motrices animales en général.
